Defender Beetles

Defenders in Beetleball exist to stop a golden dungball and to feed a clean ball back to the attacker. Early Access launched on 3 Sep 2026. Matches are always blue versus red. Gold is five dung levels. Nothing else scores, so a defender who only headbutts mid is off the job. Community character-select videos put Goliath, Earth-boring (EBB), Rhino, and Weevil here, with Atlas as the extra net threat. Ranked 3v3 still wants one of these kits, not three.

Q is on-ball if you hold the dungball and off-ball if you do not. Goalies spend most of the clock on the off-ball kit. That is not a suggestion. Goliath’s Brace, EBB’s wall, Rhino’s spikes, Weevil’s vacuum, and Atlas’s Horn Shot are the reason you queued this role. On-ball is how you escort or deny once gold is already in your mouth.

Goliath

Goliath is Defense, Hard, huge at 1.5x, strong headbutt 75. On-ball is Dungball Dive on 25s. Off-ball is Brace for Impact, a shield on 25s. Passive Ground Pound replaces the glide with a stun shockwave when you land. Named habits: Dolphin Dive and Aggro-liath. This is the dedicated goalie. You hang near the net, you alternate shield and headbutt, and you do not chase Ladybug across a cake.

Brace faces your camera. Turn it into the shot, not into the wall. Dive is how you meet gold that already left the floor. Ground Pound is your anti-air and your peel when a Click Skipjacks into the box. The cost is speed. Without a glide you do not rotate like Dung. Pair Goliath with a Cyborg laser that stuns fast balls in front of the shield. That synergy is on team comps. First-hour players can still sit Goliath-as-goalie; the beginner list keeps it there because the job is obvious even when the timing is Hard.

Earth-boring (EBB)

Earth-boring is Waller/Trickster, Medium, small at 0.9x. On-ball is Great Wall of Beetle, a dirt wall on a 35s meter. Off-ball is Dung Dive: burrow, then collapse, 35s. EBB is not a second Goliath. The wall is a meter you paint, not a timed shield. Dung Dive is a relocation and a collapse, not a goalie teleport into the enemy net.

Two patch facts matter. The max-two-in-net restriction is a Fungus pad rule, not an EBB hole rule. Do not mix them. EBB also cannot dive-place a hole in the enemy goal; that was patched. If you learned the old demo trick, bury it. Play EBB as a Waller who cuts lanes and as a Trickster who disappears under gold, not as a backdoor scorer. Medium is fair: the wall is easy to understand and easy to waste if you dump the whole meter on a ball that already turned.

Rhino

Rhino is Waller/Defense, Easy, giant at 1.25x, strongest headbutt 80. On-ball is Big Ball Spike: through terrain, 25s, keeps control. Off-ball is Earthy Spikes, a breakable wall on 30s. Passive Big Horn adds knockback. Beach tunnels are the textbook spike: you keep gold through the terrain instead of walking it around the sand.

Rhino is the beginner defender who is not a dedicated goalie. Earthy Spikes buy a second. Big Horn wins the 50/50 against Ladybug 50 and Click. Spike is the skill shot: through terrain, still yours. If you want a true net statue, pick Goliath. If you want a waller who can still carry gold a short way, pick Rhino. Click loves pinching off your spikes. Goliath plus Rhino in the same 3v3 is usually one wall too many unless the third beetle is a real carry.

Weevil (Long-nosed Weevil)

Weevil is Disruptor/Defense/Support, Hard. On-ball is Sucky Ball, a magnet on 25s with two charges. Off-ball is Snout Vacuum on 30s. Passive Beetle Helicopter puts gusts out while you flutter. This is the defender who plays the ball instead of the box. Magnet a gold that Ladybug is flying. Vacuum a merge the attackers forgot. Helicopter gusts are not Flight. They are a shove while you stay in the air.

Hard is the magnet discipline. Two charges of Sucky Ball will yank gold into your own net if you aim like Click on ping. Vacuum is peel and steal, not a travel dash. Weevil covers Goliath’s slow rotate: you contest mid, then fall back. It also supports, which is why the tags include Support, but ranked 3v3 still counts Weevil as the defender so your lobby can keep a Fungus or Firefly in the third slot.

Atlas

Atlas is Defense/Disruptor, Hard, giant at 1.4x, Launch class. On-ball is Horn Injection: an ungrabbable spiky ball on 37.5s. Off-ball is Horn Shot, a projectile on 12s with three charges. Passive Recycling lets you pick up fallen horns. Atlas does not replace Goliath. Injection makes gold ungrabbable, which is stall and deny, not a better Brace. Horn Shot is how you poke Ladybug out of the air without leaving the box. Recycle the horns or you are a 1.4x beetle with empty Q.

Play Atlas when the other color lives on grabs (Tiger Teleport Grab, Weevil magnet, Potato eat). An ungrabbable spiky ball wastes those kits. Play someone else when you need a real shield or a dirt wall. Launch class means the horn is the launch, not a Fungus pad. Do not invent a jump Atlas does not have.

How to pick among the five

Want a dedicated goalie and a shield? Goliath. Want a dirt wall and a burrow? EBB. Want Easy spikes and the 80 headbutt? Rhino. Want magnets, vacuum, and gusts? Weevil. Want ungrabbable gold and horn projectiles? Atlas. First hours: Rhino or Goliath-as-goalie. Higher skill: Weevil and Atlas, with EBB in the middle.

Defenders still merge. A goalie who never touches a 2-ball leaves the attacker starving. Feed gold out of the box. Do not build five levels on your own doorstep. Tiger is waiting for that drop.

Net habits that actually hold

Stay goal-side of gold. Face the carry. Spend off-ball Brace, wall, spikes, vacuum, or Horn Shot first. Spend on-ball Dive, Great Wall, Spike, Sucky Ball, or Horn Injection when you already have the ball or when deny is the only play. Ground Pound and Big Horn are contact tools. They are not Q.

If red parks Ladybug in the air, Goliath pounds, Atlas shoots horns, Weevil helicopters, Rhino spikes the landing, EBB walls the mouth. If red parks Click, do not give them a wall to pinch unless you are ready to break it. If red parks Potato, remember uncracked gold loses a level to a dash chomp; recrack it before you relax.

The Beetles Hub is the roster map. Support Beetles is who peels in front of you. Team comps is Goliath plus Cyborg, EBB plus a carry, Rhino plus Click pinches. Getting Started is still the five-level rule if a teammate keeps shooting ungilded dung at the net.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Beetleball players.

Who are the defender beetles?

Goliath, Earth-boring, Rhino, and Weevil, with Atlas as the extra net threat. See the Beetles Hub for the full split.

Is Goliath the only goalie?

Goliath is the dedicated goalie (Brace, Dive, Ground Pound). Rhino, EBB, Weevil, and Atlas can hold net with walls, spikes, magnets, and horns, but they rotate differently.

Can Earth-boring dive a hole into the enemy goal?

No. That was patched. EBB also does not use Fungus's max-two-pads-in-goal rule. Great Wall and Dung Dive stay on your half.

What does Q do on defense?

Holding gold is on-ball (Dive, Great Wall, Big Ball Spike, Sucky Ball, Horn Injection). Empty hands are off-ball (Brace, Dung Dive, Earthy Spikes, Snout Vacuum, Horn Shot).

Which defender should I learn first?

Rhino for Easy spikes, or Goliath if you want to sit net. Weevil and Atlas are Hard. Details are on beginner picks.
